Welcome
to Africa

Nairobi doesn’t boast a history stretching back centuries, as it’s a young city. Back in the day, the British were building a narrow-gauge railway from Mombasa to Uganda, and the site of Kenya’s modern capital was just a railway station – the very spot that sparked the city’s growth. Nowadays, Nairobi is the largest city in East Africa and a massive transport hub, a common entry point for many heading into Africa. Like any major metropolis, Nairobi means industry, heavy traffic, and its fair share of smog. Of course, tourists still flock to Kenya for the thrilling safaris and the stunning natural beauty of the African continent, so they rarely linger in Nairobi for too long. However, the city has its gems, places that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Every morning, and only here, for the guests of Giraffe Manor, the gentle giants of the savanna – the graceful Rothschild’s giraffes – come to join you for breakfast. They poke their enormous necks through the wide windows of the colonial-style mansion, swishing their velvety ears and blinking their otherworldly eyes just inches away from you. It’s a morning ritual unlike any other. You’ve likely seen photos and reviews of this hotel on Instagram, but even those capture the sheer delight experienced by the lucky few who get to stay here. Giraffe Manor comprises two buildings and just twelve rooms. Everything is exquisite – the décor, the food, the service. Everything except the price, perhaps, but that’s the cost of luxury and an exclusive encounter with giraffes.

Another rather well-known spot is the Carnivore restaurant. As the name suggests, this establishment specializes in meat dishes. And there’s meat aplenty – a wide variety, from the familiar to the exotic – that’s what draws the crowds! A small flag stands on your table, and as long as it’s there, the servers will keep coming by, offering you dish after dish. Removing the flag signals you’ve had your fill. You only pay a cover charge, interestingly. For those who don’t eat meat, the restaurant also offers a menu with vegetarian and fish options.

Just seven kilometers from the Kenyan capital’s city center lies Nairobi National Park. Spanning over a hundred square kilometers, it’s home to a diverse array of African flora and fauna. Lions, zebras, and giraffes against the backdrop of a sprawling metropolis’s skyscrapers – where else can you witness such a sight?

A couple of other interesting places worth checking out include the panoramic views of Nairobi from the helipad atop the KICC building. It’s also worth visiting the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the Danish author of “Out of Africa” (the book that inspired the movie starring Meryl Streep), and Kazuri Beads Factory (Kazuri meaning “small and beautiful” in Swahili), a fair trade bead-making workshop.

Another remarkable place in the vicinity of Nairobi is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Orphanage. Here, too, you can observe animals up close and, if you wish, contribute to the well-being of orphaned elephants by fostering a calf and donating a small amount to the trust for its care. Every year, a significant number of elephant calves are orphaned for various reasons, often due to human activity. An orphaned elephant calf cannot survive alone; it needs care, milk, and protection from the sun. Volunteers find these animals and provide them with everything they need until they are old and strong enough to live in the wild.

When it comes to choosing a hotel, whether you want to stay in Nairobi or have to because your safari only starts the next day, you need to be extremely careful. When booking a room, it’s essential to have an understanding of Nairobi’s different neighborhoods, their safety, and the hotel’s reputation based on reliable sources.
