Mombasa,
gateway to the black continent

Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city with a population exceeding one million, is a perennial magnet for tourists. This bustling metropolis serves as a veritable gateway to the African continent. For millennia, it has been a pivotal hub for the trade of spices, gold, and ivory between Africa and the East – India, Persia, and even China. In the Middle Ages, it was the site of a major secondary market. From the late 15th century onwards, following Vasco da Gama’s visit during his famed quest for a sea route to India, Mombasa became a contested prize for centuries, passing between Arab, Portuguese, Turkish, and English hands. So frequent were these changes in ownership that the strategic city earned the Swahili name “Kisiwa cha Mvita,” meaning “Island of War.”

Today, Mombasa is an industrial powerhouse, East Africa’s largest port, and a resort city boasting captivating beauty and a wealth of attractions. Medieval architecture stands alongside contemporary buildings. Narrow alleyways and vibrant markets teem with people in colorful attire, a cacophony of languages, and the fragrant aromas of spices and fruits. Souvenir shops and workshops abound, offering mementos from across Africa, including treasures salvaged from the ocean depths. A stroll through the Old Town will lead you past the historic port, where traditional wooden dhows still moor.

Ancient mosques, minarets, Hindu temples, and a Catholic cathedral all contribute to Mombasa’s unique and eclectic character. Here, in the Old Town, you’ll also find Africa’s oldest fort – Fort Jesus. The Portuguese erected this imposing structure, designed in the shape of a human body, in the 16th century. Majestic bastions surround the main courtyard, and the site holds many tales of heroism and battles. Fort Jesus endured nine sieges, each assault so fierce that the fort had to be rebuilt afterwards. Today, it houses the National Museum, where visitors can admire a variety of ancient artifacts, many recovered from the seabed.

The city of Mombasa occupies a coral island nestled between the North and South Coast. Closest to the island are the beaches of Shanzu, Bamburi, and Nyali, offering excellent restaurants, bars, casinos, and even a cinema and bowling alley. Here, you’ll find a full spectrum of beachside activities, including good diving, Haller Park (where you can hand-feed giraffes and encounter giant tortoises), ancient ruins, and kite surfing. Mombasa is a popular choice for those looking to combine beach relaxation with sightseeing excursions. Travelers whose sole focus is beach typically prefer the hotels along the beaches of Diani, Malindi, Watamu, and Kilifi.
