We’re often asked what differentiates a $3,000-a-night lodge from one that costs $300. The answer is simple: it’s the same difference between a Subaru and a Bugatti. Both will get you from A to B, but the journey you experience will be worlds apart. The caliber of a lodge manifests itself in every detail. The personalized attention, seamless service, and attentiveness of the staff are what stand out. Communal spaces’ décor, exquisite cuisine, provided transportation, and expert guidance make it special. It’s the understated elegance and comfort of the accommodation, the spacious and authentic design of the bathrooms, and, of course, the view from your room. And, it encompasses the availability and quality of additional amenities, such as a spa or equestrian facilities.

Many who are planning a trip to Africa are curious about the level of comfort they can expect. We assure you that even the most skeptical will find pleasant surprises.

A fireplace, plush armchairs, floor-to-ceiling windows. No, this isn’t the main lounge, but your bathroom. Here, the bathtub takes center stage. The bathroom also includes a sized walk-in shower for those who prefer showering. Like a tropical downpour, the streams of water wash away the day’s dust in the evening and invigorate you for a new day brimming with adventure. The panoramic views of the mountains or the savanna ensure you won’t miss a single ray of sunlight or any movement in the natural world. You’ll also find dual vanities and large mirrors. The wardrobe contains not only soft robes but often yoga mats and perhaps even watercolor paints – such beauty will awaken the artist in anyone. Your personal butler will light the fireplace and draw your bath to your specifications.

Feeling peckish? Here, dishes are prepared especially for you, with meticulous attention paid to your preferences and dietary restrictions. The presentation is key, with a desire to surprise. Crisp, fresh vegetables, often from the lodge’s own garden, fragrant spices, and caught fish from the coast, tender meats, sweet fruits, and intricate desserts you won’t be able to resist will give you a true taste of Africa. And of course, we haven’t forgotten the drinks. Top-tier lodges include beverages. Local beers, South African wines, and a wide selection of spirits are on offer, plus premium alcohol for an additional charge. Should your palate desire something else, we will do our utmost to have it brought to your table.

The primary advantage of a luxury lodge or camp is, without a doubt, its location. The wilderness waits for no one. On safari, as in life, being in the right place at the right time is invaluable. The greater the distance from other buildings, and therefore from other visitors, the better, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature without having to share it. Ideally, it will be in a truly remote area, difficult or even impossible to reach independently. Often, these are private conservancies where access is restricted to invited guests. Here, there are additional perks not found in most places: night drives and off-roading – the freedom to explore beyond the established tracks and the chance to get exceptionally close to the wildlife.

Upon returning to the lodge during the heat of the day, after an emotionally charged morning on safari, we highly recommend indulging in spa treatments. Many procedures, such as massages, are often performed outdoors, so don’t be surprised if a herd of elephants strolls by or a giraffe pauses to observe you.

A day on the savanna culminates in a sundowner. This is a cherished tradition of enjoying a drink as the sun sets. Comfortably seated in a canvas safari chair, overlooking the fading light, by a crackling fire, perhaps near a rhino herd, or at a small table swiftly and expertly set up near your jeep, you’ll watch as the sun dips below the horizon. Then, it’s just you and Africa.
