Northern Kenya,
a lost world

Northern Kenya is brimming with breathtaking beauty, but many of its most enchanting spots are so remote that they’re only accessible by helicopter. The best way to experience a helicopter tour of northern Kenya is to set off from Samburu or the Laikipia Plateau. Prepare to witness a different side of Kenya, far removed from the typical images in glossy tourist brochures. Await incredible locations, places seen by tourists, where untouched nature reigns supreme, and birds and animals call the northern Kenya home. You’ll soar through the sky like a bird, touch down in areas where human footprints are scarce, and pause for coffee breaks and lunch with spectacular vistas of Kenyan valleys, plains, lakes, and volcanoes.

Next stop: the Suguta Valley. We’ll fly over the “Twin Towers” – the double peak of the Nataruuk rock, a nesting site for vultures; across the surreal, almost alien landscapes of the Hoodoo Valley with its towering limestone spires capped with massive boulders; over the Painted Valley, where contrasting layers of rock and volcanic ash paint the valley floor in a fantastical rainbow of colors; above a vibrant green oasis amidst desolate salt flats and solidified lava flows with crystal-clear water teeming with crocodiles; and, we’ll land among pristine sand dunes, leaving the only footprints for hundreds of kilometers around.

Providing a stark contrast to the landscape is Lake Logipi. This small lake features Cathedral Rock, a craggy island in its center that serves as a haven for flamingos. You’ll have the chance to observe these stunning, graceful birds as they form pink waves around the blue-green lake.

En route to Lake Turkana, we’ll fly over a colossal, jet-black lava barrier that separates Lake Logipi from its enormous neighbor – Lake Turkana. Turkana is the world’s largest desert lake, stretching 290 kilometers. Its sheer size and striking emerald-green waters have earned it the moniker “the Jade Sea.”

On the lake’s southern shore lies another Kenyan highlight and a genuine wonder of the natural world – the Nabiyotum Crater. Many online photos depict the Nabiyotum Crater—you may have even unknowingly seen its captivating image. However, witnessing this marvel of African nature firsthand is an experience few have had.

Your flight will continue past the sacred mountains of Nyiro and Ndoto, with a stop at the Matthews Range. Its forested cliffs rise above the arid plains, creating a “sky island” ecosystem. Here, we’ll take a walk through a “cycad forest” – cycads being some of the oldest plants on Earth, having remained unchanged for millions of years.

While in the area, we’ll also visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. This is the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Samburu. Local Samburu communities have united to protect Africa’s wildlife and have established this wonderful haven where experts help orphaned elephant calves, whose parents have fallen victim to poaching, to survive. Visitors can witness the heartwarming sight of the young elephants feeding, drinking milk, and enjoying mud baths. It’s an incredibly touching and endearing experience, guaranteed to evoke magical emotions in all who visit!

On the return journey from the north, a must-see is the majestic flat-topped mountain of Ololokwe, en route towards Mount Kenya – the continent’s second-highest peak.
