The Samburu
special five
Kenya never ceases to amaze. A safari tour in the Samburu National Reserve is a genuine treasure for any traveler and adventure seeker. What draws tourists to Samburu? It doesn’t have the same overwhelming crowds as other, more well-known parks. It’s home to a remarkable number of endemic animals that you’d spot in other reserves. Samburu is about three hundred and fifty kilometers northeast of Nairobi. If you’re looking to venture even further north into Kenya, breathtaking helicopter excursions are your only option – there’s no other way to get there!
“Samburu” is a general term encompassing three reserves within this area: the Samburu National Reserve itself, Buffalo Springs National Reserve, and Shaba National Reserve.

Safaris in Samburu aren’t just about ticking off the “Big Five”; they offer the chance to see the “Samburu Special Five” – animals you can observe in this region! This unique quintet includes the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the gerenuk. Reticulated giraffes are a rare sight in the wild, with just over 8,000 individuals remaining. Their coat pattern comprises large, polygonal, brownish-orange patches outlined by a network of pure white lines. Grevy’s zebras also stand out from their relatives with finer and more elegant stripes along their flanks and backs. The Beisa oryx, a type of serow, is an rare species of antelope native to the arid plains of Africa and teetering on the brink of extinction.

It was here, in Samburu, that the famous lioness Kamunyak lived, known for her extraordinary adoption of several young oryx calves. The Somali ostrich (or Gerenuk) is the largest subspecies of African ostrich, with these colossal birds reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters! And then there are the enchanting giraffe gazelles – the gerenuk. These shy animals possess striking features, with enormous eyes and long necks. They have a comical way of feeding on tree leaves, standing on their hind legs, and stretching to their full height. Of course, you’ll also find elephants, buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, and leopards here, along with the tiny dik-dik antelopes and much more!

The landscape in Samburu is diverse. You can marvel at the dry, thorny savanna and the riverine forests, the waters of the Ewaso Ng’iro River sustain whose vegetation. During the dry season, the riverbed dries up, and animals come here to dig small holes that fill with water, quenching their thirst. This is a prime location to observe the lives of elephants – the majestic giants of Africa – as they use their tusks to dig for water in the parched earth! Crocodiles also inhabit this area, remaining in burrows dug into the riverbed during the dry season. Incidentally, the dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing, as the sparse vegetation makes spotting animals much easier. You can even explore the Ewaso Ng’iro riverbed on quad bikes!

Within the park’s boundaries live the nomadic pastoralist Samburu tribe, from whom the reserve takes its name, as well as the Pokot tribe. These vibrant African communities have preserved their ancient way of life and customs to this day. You’ll encounter captivating rituals and beliefs, traditional medicine, striking appearances, impressive dances, traditional dwellings, intricate adornments, and everyday artifacts.

Africa is first and foremost the wild animal world of the national parks, each of which is unique.
