Why is it worth it
to find all the big five?
You see the Big Five, you hit the African jackpot!
That’s the feeling every visitor to Africa gets when they set eyes on the famous Big Five. This term dates back to the colonial era, when hunters used it to refer to the most dangerous animals – the ones that would charge rather than flee when wounded.
The lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard: these are the five coveted creatures that send a shiver down a hunter’s spine at the mere mention.
So, where can you hit this jackpot? It takes some doing, as seeing them all together isn’t a walk in the park, but there are reserves that offer a decent shot. Lions, elephants, and buffalo are pretty easy to come by, but leopards and rhinos play a bit of hide-and-seek.

For leopards, your best bet is the Maasai Mara in Kenya. You might just luck out and spot one of these beauties lounging on a tree branch with its kill.
The Serengeti in Tanzania is another top spot for leopards, and your chances of a wild encounter are also pretty good there.
Poachers often target rhinos, especially black rhinos, so you’re more likely to see them in private conservancies like Solio or Ol Pejeta in Kenya. Here, the animals are more relaxed around people, and you can even get out of your vehicle and watch the sunset with an entire herd silhouetted against the horizon.

As for Tanzania and its famous Ngorongoro Crater, which also has a good rhino population, there are fewer perks. You’re not allowed to stray from the designated roads, so if a rhino isn’t passing by at that exact moment, you might be out of luck and the drive could be a bit of a letdown.
Seeing all the African Big Five on a single safari is always a monumental experience, worthy of bragging rights, but not everyone gets that lucky.Wild nature is amazing and always unpredictable. Either way, we’ve got some cool perks lined up for you when you arrive.

Seeing the Big Five in a single safari is always a truly spectacular event.
