The Ngorongoro National Park is a place of unique wonders, starting with its very origins.
2.5 million years ago, the massive Ngorongoro volcano erupted so forcefully that it blew its peak to smithereens and collapsed it inwards. This created an enormous caldera (20 km in diameter, up to 700 m deep, and about 300 sq km in area), lined with solidified lava. It was flat, but complex tectonic shifts sculpted it into a landscape of lakes, rivers, gorges, swamps, savannahs, and even low-lying mountains. Over time, lush vegetation carpeted the crater floor and slopes.
The crater’s name derives from “Likorongo,” the term for Maasai warriors who defended their ancestral lands against invaders. It’s a fitting name. Just as those proud warriors guarded their home, the high, sheer walls of Ngorongoro protect the park’s breathtaking beauty from the outside world.
These steep walls also keep the animals within the crater, while slowing air circulation and water runoff. This ensures a bountiful food supply for all the herbivores and birds of Ngorongoro. As you might expect, the local predators aren’t roughing it either, so the crater teems with wildlife: elephants, lions, hyenas, hippos, leopards, the rare black rhino, cheetahs, antelopes, zebras, buffalo, and monkeys.
At the heart of the crater lies a salt lake, a favorite haunt of the hippos. Its shores oscillate between a serene haven and a battleground. Ngorongoro is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to hundreds of avian species.
Camps and lodges dot the crater’s rim, offering jaw-dropping views of this natural wonder. Ngorongoro, like the Great Migration, is one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.

The camp is nestled on the slope of Olmoti Volcano in the mountain forest, close to the Ngorongoro Crater. There are eight dome-shaped bungalows. Each room has panoramic glazing, through which you can observe the landscape of the Serengeti National Park, special windows-illuminators, so that the beauty of the starry African sky to hide from you. While staying at the campsite, you can walk along the ancient Maasai trail to the top of Olmoti volcano or to the Empakai crater, famous for its alkaline lake and countless flamingos.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is nestled on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater and combines simple ethnicity with baroque chic. And there are roses of all shades and sizes! Lemala Ngorongoro Camp is very conveniently located east of the crater, in the thicket of an old acacia forest. It takes 10-15 minutes to get to the bottom of the crater and you will be there sooner than guests at other camps. The interior of the spacious tents is rustic in style. The tent dining area is reminiscent of the best restaurants in the Wild West. Apart from the stunning safari, highland walks, you can enjoy a sumptuous picnic lunch at the bottom of the crater. A children’s entertainment program enthralls young guests.
