Archipelago off the coast of Tanzania

  • The emerald jewel of the Indian ocean
  • Culture, seafood, and watersports
  • Luxury beach vacations

This isn’t a fairytale,
it’s Zanzibar

The fiery gold of sunbeams, the dazzling white sand of the beaches, the pensive whisper of the ocean surf, the sighs of the breeze in the palm fronds, the frolicking dolphins and slow-moving turtles, the ancient homes of Arab-Indian architecture and the glittering displays of upscale shops, the pungent scent of natural spices and the sweet fragrance of tropical flowers.

This isn’t a fairy tale. This is the coral archipelago of Zanzibar, off the east coast of Tanzania. The archipelago comprises 75 islands, but only three are major: Unguja Island (often called Zanzibar), Pemba Island, and Mafia Island (pronounced “Mah-fee-ah”).

Zanzibar is the perfect destination for both solo and family trips. There are leisure options for almost every taste. Sports and beach vacations, a plethora of themed excursions, historical landmarks, shopping, exotic cuisine – take your pick.

The southeast of Unguja Island is a veritable paradise for athletes and nature enthusiasts: surfing, snorkeling, diving. And, of course, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park – mangrove thickets, giant ferns, impenetrable jungle greenery. Here, you’ll see dwarf antelopes, agile colobus monkeys, and butterflies that look like fantastical flying flowers. In Chwaka Bay, you can admire dolphins, sharks, and swift, sharp-nosed marlins.

The northwest seems tailor-made for those who prefer a more relaxed vacation. After swimming and basking in the sun’s rays, you can enjoy a massage and dinner right on the beach, under the starry expanse of the tropical sky. The number one beach here is Kendwa.

Pemba and Mafia are worth visiting if you’re a fan of diving or deep-sea fishing and prefer seclusion, as there are far fewer tourists here than on Unguja. The coral reefs here are beyond praise: The Emerald Reef, Samaki Reef, and Manta Point Reef are renowned. Nature lovers will also enjoy it here: baobab forests, seabird and turtle nesting sites, whales, sharks, rays, and dolphins. Pemba also has the ruins of a medieval fortress.

Two VIP islands: Thanda Island and Mnemba Island. These are private estates, and vacations here come at a hefty price. But it’s worth it – it’s no coincidence that world-celebrities like Michael Douglas, Bill Gates, Sharon Stone, and many others vacation in these secluded paradises.

The smaller islands of the archipelago also have much to offer: Juani Island has many turtle colonies. The ruins of the city of Kua are also located here. Chole Island is famous for its fruit orchards and baobab forests. And it’s also home to giant fruit bats. On Jibondo Island, you’ll meet shark hunters and see them build and equip fishing boats by hand.

Ecotourism enthusiasts favor Chumbe Island for its lush, almost untouched nature. People visit tiny Grave Island to pay respects to the graves of English soldiers who died in World War I. On Prison Island, you can pet and feed giant turtles. Among: Among them, the oldest is about 200 years old.

The archipelago’s main city, located on the west coast of Unguja, is also called Zanzibar. The old part of the city – the legendary Stone Town – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the “African Venice,” as this stunningly beautiful place is often called, local, Persian, Arab, Indian, and European elements are intricately mixed. A complex labyrinth of narrow streets – so narrow that you can only get around on foot. Medieval mosques adorned with exquisite gold-plated carvings. Old eastern-style houses with open verandas and mandatory carved doors – each door is a true work of art! Markets and bathhouses straight out of the “Arabian Nights.” Stately colonial-style mansions.

The most famous landmarks of Stone Town: the old Arab fort, the Sultan’s Palace, nicknamed “The House of Wonders,” the former slave market with a monument to slaves, the first Anglican church in all of East Africa – where the heart of David Livingstone is buried, the house where the legendary Freddie Mercury was born, and the Forodhani Gardens – a former pier, now a market.

Other attractions on Unguja include the fishing village of Kizimkazi in the south of the island – home to the oldest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. Ladies will undoubtedly enjoy a tour of the seaweed farm on the west coast, where unique handmade organic cosmetics are sold. And, of course, the village of Kizimbani, an hour’s drive from Stone Town. People come here to stroll through plantations of spices, medicinal herbs, flowers, and fruits.

Stone Town is an eastern city, so shopping is a must. Precious stones, aromatic oils, spices, coffee, statuettes, boxes, and other handicrafts by local artisans, colorful scarves, souvenirs made from coins – you name it, they have it.

Zanzibar cuisine is famous for its seafood dishes and exotic cocktails – one of the most popular being the baobab shake. Be sure to visit “The Rock” restaurant, located on a rock in the middle of the ocean. During high tide, waves lap around the restaurant, so you have to get there by boat, while during low tide, you can walk.
