Why is it worth
catching the Great Migration?

The Great Migration in Africa is a spectacle of unparalleled beauty and drama. Every year, massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, and other ungulates surge towards the lush pastures of the Masai Mara in search of sustenance. While in Tanzania the herds disperse across the flat plains, in the Masai Mara they converge at river crossing points, creating a sense of an endless sea of animals. Along their journey, they must overcome numerous obstacles, the most daunting of which is undoubtedly the crossing of the Mara River. Millions of wildebeest charge through the winding rivers, a relentless onslaught. Thousands of herbivores approach the river’s edge, hesitant to take the plunge, as the waters teem with crocodiles lying in wait. The more astute zebra bide their time, letting the wildebeest pave the way.

And then, the first victim is pushed into the water, and a torrent of thousands of hooves plunges into the river. Some are trampled by their own kind in the chaos, others drown, or fall prey to the crocodiles lurking in the depths and the predators poised for a feast on the banks. Lions and cheetahs keep a watchful eye on the herbivores, ready to pounce at a moment’s notice. The spectacle is truly grand and exhilarating. The migration continues year-round, but its most captivating phase unfolds in Kenya from July to October, not only because the density of animals per square meter of savanna is breathtaking, but also because this is the prime time for witnessing big cat hunts.

Territorial predators stake out the herds on their lands year after year, jealously guarding their domain. The migration comes and goes, but the predators remain. For photographers, this is a period of pure nirvana – no self-respecting photographer has yet to miss or does not plan to capture the Great Migration. The Great Migration is extremely popular, so lodging is crucial during this period. If you’re planning a safari in Kenya, it’s essential to book accommodations well in advance! The most luxurious lodges with ideal locations, right by the river and away from the crowds, fill up quickly.
