Why fish
in Africa?

Deep-sea fishing is a thrilling and captivating adventure. It’s a trip on a equipped boat, accompanied by an experienced crew, out into the open ocean, hunting for big game fish. Fishing isn’t just a pastime; every angler dreams of landing that one fish, their dream catch. Remember how Hemingway described it in “The Old Man and the Sea”? Deep-sea fishing is a grand confrontation where the angler must display all their skill, dexterity, and physical strength. After all, your trophy is a powerful, large fish, not hauled from the water. The accompanying crew will teach you the finer points of angling, and their coordinated teamwork will help even novices avoid going home empty-handed. For those who love fishing and active water recreation, a boat trip into the open sea can provide a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

Africa boasts many world-class deep-sea fishing destinations that attract tourists from all corners of the globe. If you’re touring Kenya, the Pemba Channel is the prime spot. This 50 km wide and 800 m deep channel, separating East Africa from the Tanzanian island of Pemba, offers the best marlin fishing in all of East Africa. Anglers have set seven all-African records for catching these giants there. Anglers have caught more than half of Kenya’s record-breaking marlin in these waters. The Pemba Channel allows you to target striped, black, and blue marlin, sailfish, swordfish, mako sharks, wahoo, tuna, dorado, giant trevally, and many other exotic species, all in one location.

The fishing is excellent year-round, but your chances of a rich haul are especially high from November to March, when the northeast monsoon winds cause mineral-rich chilly waters to rise from the channel’s depths. This attracts a multitude of fish, including large predators from the marlin family, such as sailfish, blue, black, and striped marlin, swordfish, amberjack, and barracuda. If you’re lucky, you might land a “hat-trick” (three species), a “grand slam” (four species), or even a “super grand slam” (all five marlin species) in a single day. The second most popular fishing spot in Kenya is Watamu, with the Hemingway Watamu deep-sea fishing center being renowned.

Yes, indeed, the old man himself, Hemingway, frequented the southern coast of Kenya and fished these waters! The coastal waters of Watamu provide ideal fishing conditions. Here, at the convergence of the coastal East African and Somali currents, lies the North Kenya Banks, an underwater plateau stretching from Watamu to Lamu Island. This causes upwellings of cold, nutrient-rich deep waters, attracting a plethora of fish and marine predators. These waters are home to three marlin species: sailfish, broadbill swordfish, and short bill spearfish. The coastal waters of Watamu are part of the Watamu National Marine Park, a unique ecosystem.

Lucky travelers on tours in South Africa head out for deep-sea fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of the Cape of Good Hope. People rightfully consider these waters among the world’s best for landing large trophies from the ocean depths. Anglers from around the world come to fish for tuna in the waters around Cape Town, drawn by the incredible size of the marine trophies. The standard weight of local tuna ranges from 50 to 70 kilograms, but some truly fortunate anglers have landed giant fish weighing over 100 kilograms! Other excellent fishing spots in the southern part of the continent include Sodwana Bay and Richard’s Bay in South Africa, and the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique.

If you’re touring Zanzibar, fishing is possible in the renowned Pemba Channel or in the ocean near any of the archipelago’s islands. For example, the waters around Unguja offer excellent fishing for dorado, barracuda, tuna, sailfish, kingfish, and many other deep-sea dwellers of the Indian Ocean.

Whichever of these locations you choose, you’ll experience incredible sensations, salty ocean spray, a wealth of emotions, and, of course, a professional support team.

Africa’s top fishing spots

Zanzibar

This is the Zanzibar archipelago, a coral group off the east coast of Tanzania. While it comprises 75 islands, only three are significant: Unguja Island (often simply called Zanzibar), Pemba Island, and Mafia Island.
