Why should you
peer into a volcano’s mouth?

Getting a peek into the maw of a churning volcano? That’s something few people ever get to do. It’s an mind-blowing experience. You feel you’re a professor straight out of a Jules Verne novel, about to embark on a journey to the Earth’s core. There are only a handful of lava lakes in the world, and the crazy thing is, they could cool down and solidify at any moment. They seethe, bubble, and churn, with what looks like hundreds of dazzling flashes, radiating a reddish-orange glow and the heat of the underworld. Getting to a lava lake and seeing these “gates of Hell” with your own eyes is pretty tough. One such lake is even in Antarctica, for example. But the two biggest, most beautiful, and accessible ones are in Africa: Nyiragongo in Congo and Erta Ale in Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, it’s the Erta Ale volcano that draws tourists in the Danakil Depression. This desert could be called the hottest place on Earth, with air temperatures that can hit a scorching 63°C (around 145°F). Besides the volcano itself, you’ll witness the surreal landscape of the desert with neon, alien-looking fields of geysers at Dallol, the lowest subaerial volcano on the planet. You can also take a dip in the vibrant blue waters of natural pools, and if you’re lucky, you might have an unforgettable encounter with the Afar people (which, by the way, translates to “ashes”). These folks, as if born from the ashes themselves, have been mining salt in the desert for centuries.

In Congo, the only way to reach the Nyiragongo volcano is by helicopter. On your way, you can visit the stunning Lake Kivu and maybe even drop in on the gorillas, which are sadly facing extinction these days.

Each point of the route has already been tried by us personally, it remains to make an individual program for you personally.

Where can you go to see active volcanoes in Africa?
