If you’re a shutterbug—amateur or pro—and you’re hankering to catch Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, this is your spot. Lemala Ngorongoro, a cozy little camp with just nine tents, is perched east of the crater, tucked away in an old acacia grove. A mere 10-15 minute hop down to the crater floor, and you’ll beat the crowds from other camps. For a whole glorious hour, the sun-kissed, verdant expanse of Ngorongoro will be all yours. Snap away to your heart’s content!
The spacious tents are decked out in a rustic-chic style. Think bold splashes of color, plush down duvets, powerful heaters to take the edge off the night chill, rich, dark wood floors and furniture, soft rugs, and a roomy walk-in closet. Each tent boasts a charming veranda, just the ticket for a cuppa or a fresh-squeezed juice.

The dining tent vibes like a swanky Wild West saloon: a long communal table, a well-stocked bar, vintage-style posters, vibrant rugs, and soft, ambient lighting. You can also opt for dinner and cocktails by the campfire, soaking in a fiery sunset and listening to the Maasai warriors’ songs.
Beyond the killer safaris and bush walks, they’ve got a gourmet picnic lunch waiting for you down in the crater. You can also swing by a Maasai boma (cattle farm), dive into their tribal rituals, and sample their traditional fare. Or, take a jaunt to a Makonde village, where they’ll show you around their banana and rice plantations, local artisan workshops, and treat you to a scrumptious lunch.

The Lemala Cubs program is a guaranteed hit with the little ones. They’ll get to play junior ranger, learn to throw a spear and shoot a bow, and swap stories around the campfire. The sheer joy on a kid’s face when they see a herd of elephants, a graceful antelope, or a flamboyance of flamingos? Priceless. You’ve got to see it to believe it.
