Tanzania
eternally youthful antiquity

If you measure Tanzania’s age as a nation-state, it’s a newborn. But if you’re talking about the dawn of humankind, then Tanzania is the oldest place on Earth.

For nature lovers, Tanzania is a dream come true. National parks and reserves comprise half the country. The Serengeti, the epicenter of the Great Migration, is a major draw, along with the unique Ngorongoro volcanic crater and Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent’s tallest and most iconic peak. Mount Meru, a twin-peaked volcano, and Ol Doinyo Lengai, with its black lava, may be lesser known, but are still spectacular.

Picture this: emerald-green jungles, golden-green savannahs, deep-malachite mangrove forests, crystal-clear turquoise ocean, and a kaleidoscope of coral reefs. The stark beauty of the mountains, the frozen flames of extinct volcanoes, the pristine white-sand beaches, and the shimmering blue-green rivers and lakes.

The Great Rift Valley’s mighty lakes – Victoria, Nyasa, and “Africa’s Baikal,” Tanganyika – attract tourists from all over the globe. Lake Natron’s waters are so alkaline, they turn animal carcasses into mummified statues. And on the shores of Lake Manyara, thousands of flamingos flock during migration season.

Then there are the thousand-year-old baobab forests, the “amphibious forest” of mangrove labyrinths, and plantations bursting with flowers, spices, and coffee. Not to mention the vast populations of elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, monkeys, hippos, crocodiles, rhinos, and turtles. Plus, a dizzying array of birds and fish in every color and size imaginable.

With its abundant coral reefs and stunning beaches, Tanzania is a haven for diving, deep-sea fishing, sailing, and good old-fashioned beach bumming. Kendwa, the “millionaires’ beach,” and Nungwi, a diver’s paradise, are among Tanzania’s top spots.

History buffs, you’re in for a treat, too. Tanzania is home to the cradle of humankind – the Olduvai Gorge. Dar es Salaam boasts beautiful temples, fascinating museums, and vibrant markets. In Bagamoyo, you can explore the ruins of ancient mosques, a mission building, and the Livingstone Memorial. And in Zanzibar, Stone Town is straight out of an Arabian Nights tale. Think ancient mosques, carved houses, the ruins of an Arab fort, a secondary market, bathhouses, bazaars, and gardens. Be prepared to hoof it – Stone Town’s narrow alleyways are too tight for even the smallest car.

Tanzanian cuisine is a tantalizing fusion of Asian, European, and local flavors, ranging from simple to exotic. And speaking of exotic, you’ll find it in spades here. Many hunting, fishing, and farming villages still live a traditional, even primitive, lifestyle. A trip to these villages is like stepping into a time machine, back to the dawn of civilization. It’s a real-life, safe time warp.

For souvenirs, pick up some stunning gemstones, especially tanzanite, found only in the depths of Kilimanjaro. You can also find unique Makonde wood carvings, handcrafted ethnic jewelry, batik-style scarves and wraps, and, of course, Tanzanian coffee.
